High School

Most colleges expect 4 years of math and science for engineering

  • Colleges look at course rigor. Taking the math track, which gets you to calculus by your senior year, is encouraged.

  • AP classes are encouraged because they are standard across the country. Some schools will allow you to earn college credit based upon your AP score, but for engineering majors, the school sometimes wants you to retake calculus the way they teach it.

  • Other schools will allow you to use the AP test to fulfill prerequisites.

  • Some schools offer concurrent/ dual enrollment, where you can earn college credit while in high school. In some states those classes are guaranteed to transfer, not always in your major.

  • High school is a time to try engineering classes if they are offered at your school.

  • If you don't have a women's STEM/ engineering club, consider starting one. You can check our SWENext tab for more information on how to start a STEM club.

  • Learn more about different types of engineering through STEM summer camps.

  • You can also learn more about engineering through summer programs at your local colleges. Typically, these programs are designed for rising Juniors or Seniors.
